History
The Missionary Diocese of All Saints (MDAS), formed 2009, was the first diocese formed by the Anglican Church in North America.
It was the fulfillment of decades of prayer that those adhering to the apostolic deposit within the Anglican patrimony, under the auspices of Forward in Faith North America, would have a diocese for all clergy, churches, and ministries that held fast to the preservation of catholic faith and order within the Anglican tradition.
Bishop Ilgenfritz, first bishop of MDAS, was the first episcopal consecration of the then-new province. He led the diocese from a missionary diocese that began with “no parishes, no money, no resources” into a ‘full’ diocesan status, with more than 30 churches and nearly 100 attached clergy. MDAS chose to retain the “Missionary” prefix to emphasize what is most important: to be in continuity with those Anglo-Catholic priests who were committed missionaries in all places, to all people: as much in the inner-city slums as abroad.
In 2020, Bishop Richard Lipka, one of Bp Ilgenfritz’s co-consecrators, succeeded him as second diocesan bishop of MDAS. Bishop Lipka successfully led the diocese through the turbulent time of a global pandemic, and cultivated the diocese to be ripe and ready for the leadership of the man who would be his successor. Bishop Lipka will be stepping down as the ordinary of the diocese in March 2025, at which point Bishop Darryl Fitzwater, consecrated as Bishop Coadjutor of MDAS in October 2024, will take his place.
